Tour description
For a great fishing and river experience, journey with us into
Ruatahuna at the heart of Te Ika-a-Maui - the Heart of Maui’s Fish -
the North Island of New Zealand. We are Tuhoe, the original Maori
people if this land, known as ‘Children of the Mist’ for we are born
of our mountains cloaked in mist. We are a mountain forest dwelling
people, guardians of Te Urewera, a vast rainforest region, one of the
most remote and pristine parts of New Zealand.
Nau mai! Haere mai! Welcome to our world! We will share with you
our pure river waters, stunning scenery and great trout fishing, along
with our home hospitality and special culinary delights.
You can be collected from nearby centres or you will make your
own way here. We will take you straight to your trusty horses and
guide ready to take you along a trail high above the river, and
through stands of indigenous forest, that takes in the stunning
scenery of the upper Whakatane River. Then down to the starting
point for the day’s fishing.
You will discover the joys of fishing a river that is remote, well away
from the crowds of other regions. Good size river trout - rainbow
and brown - of 5 lb are common. You will enjoy lunch by the river
and take all day to fish an extensive stretch of our river.
You will be brought back to the warm home hospitality of Tuhoe at
Ruatahuna, with tasty home cooking and a barbeque or smoker for
your trout if you want to bring one back to enjoy. Relax and enjoy
your evening. A hearty breakfast in the morning will see you on your
or you can be taken on to your next point of call.
